I’m Andy Mann, a Cambridge-educated English tutor with over 18 years’ experience helping students become stronger readers, more confident writers and more independent thinkers.
I work with students preparing for 11+, independent-school entrance, KS3, GCSE and IGCSE English, with a particular focus on comprehension, analytical and creative writing, and developing the confidence to express ideas clearly and thoughtfully.

My Background
I attended Harrow School on a full scholarship before going on to study at the University of Cambridge, where I graduated in 2008.
I began tutoring that same year and have since worked with students across a wide range of ages and abilities, from younger children preparing for competitive school entrance examinations to older students developing sophisticated analytical and academic writing.
Over the years, students I have taught have gained places and scholarships at leading independent schools, while older students have developed their writing for GCSE, IGCSE and advanced academic work.
What I enjoy most about teaching English is helping students move beyond simply knowing the “right answer”. I want them to understand why an answer works, develop ideas of their own and become increasingly confident in shaping those ideas into clear, thoughtful writing.

Developing Strong Readers
Good writing begins with good reading. I help students look closely at language, character, structure and ideas, and learn to move beyond surface-level responses.

Developing Independent Thinkers
I encourage students to question, interpret and form their own judgements rather than simply repeat ideas they think a teacher or examiner wants to hear.

Writing with Purpose
Whether a student is writing an essay or a story, I want them to think about what they are really trying to say. Clear structure and accurate expression matter, but strong writing also requires purpose, judgement and an awareness of the reader.
My Philosophy on Writing
I am also a fiction writer, and that experience strongly influences the way I teach creative writing. I do not teach storytelling as a checklist of techniques. I want students to understand how stories actually work.
As students become more advanced, we can explore character motivation, conflict, theme, ambiguity, subtext, narrative voice and emotional impact. The aim is not simply to produce a story that is technically competent, but to write something that feels purposeful, convincing and worth reading.
I bring the same principles to analytical writing. The strongest essays do more than identify techniques or follow a formula. They develop an idea, explore complexity and communicate a clear, convincing interpretation.
